The Italian Embassy to the Holy See is the Italian diplomatic mission accredited to the Holy See and to the Sovereign Order of Malta. It is based in Rome and is the only italian Embassy based in Italy.

Based on the Vienna Convention on Diplomatic Relations dated April 18, 1961 the functions of an Embassy are, among others:

• To represent Italy at the Holy See and at SMOM;
• To protect the interests of Italy and of its nationals, within the limits permitted by international law;
• To negotiate with the Government of the Holy See;
• To ascertain by all lawful means conditions and developments in the Holy See and SMOM, and reporting there on to the Italian Government;
•To promote friendly relations between Italy, the Holy See and the SMOM, and developing their economic, cultural and scientific relations

Through its Consular section, the Embassy of Italy at the Holy See also offers a host of consular services to Italian and non-Italian citizens living within its jurisdiction.
The Embassy also coordinates the relations between the Embassies of third countries accredited at the Holy See and the Italian Ceremonial.
