On June 21st, in the occasion of the Music Festival, the Church of Santa Maria del Priorato in Aventino hosted the concert “Cantate Domino” performed by the Papal Sistine Chapel Choir and organized by the Italian Embassy to the Holy See and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta and the Embassy of the Sovereign Military Order of Malta to Italy.
With its 1500 years of history, the Choir, directed by Maestro Massimo Palombella, is the oldest choral formation in the world still active, composed by 20 permanent adult singers and about 35 young singers selected all over the world.
The Sistine Chapel Choir is more than just a cultural legacy: it plays an active role during the papal celebrations in St Peter’s Basilica, and in the Sistine Chapel itself. As the Holy Father’s personal choir, it is called upon to play an ecumenical role, and to be part of the relationship between the various Christian confessions, contributing to merging in music what has been separated by history and politics. This mission has led the Choir to dialogue with leading choirs around the world during its international tours.
The concert took place in the Church of Santa Maria del Priorato in Aventino, originally called Sancta Maria de Aventino, because it was built on the site where an icon of the Virgin Mary was found. It was built in 936 A.D. by the Benedictine Monk Oddone da Cluny and, together with the entire complex of the Magistral Villa, in 1312 become property of the Order of Hospitallers, the current Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

The Music Festival was promoted by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities and Tourism in collaboration with different Institutions and Ministries including the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation.

Among the participants to the Concert, His Highness Grand Master Fra’ Giacomo della Torre del Tempio di Sanguinetto, H.E. Mgr Paul Richard Gallagher, Secretary for Relations with States within the Holy See’s Secretariat of State, H.E. Mgr Emil Paul Tscherrig, Apostolic Nuncio in Italy, the Minister of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation prof.
