Welcome Message

Dear visitors,

I am pleased to welcome you on the website of the Italian Embassy to the Holy See and to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

Italy and the Holy See established diplomatic relations in 1929, following to the signature of the Lateran Treaty, and since then, bilateral relations have been steadily deepened and strengthened.

The aim of this bilateral Embassy – the only one located in Rome among the Italian diplomatic network – is to look after every aspect of the multiple relationships between Italy and the Holy See, ranging from the political to the cultural and international cooperation. In this regard, it is enough to mention for example that in Rome there are Pontifical Universities and Institutes of post-graduate specialization in ecclesiastical subjects that host almost 40,000 students from over 140 countries.

This Embassy also deals with the bilateral relations between Italy and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, that established its government in our country in 1834. The Order carries out meritorious activities of assistance especially in the healthcare sector. Active in 120 Countries with humanitarian projects, the Order operates in Italy through CISOM, the Italian Rescue Body, which has always stood out for its action in the various emergencies that have affected our country over the years. Italy and SMOM also collaborate in the field of development cooperation thanks to a memorandum of understanding signed in 2019.

The purpose of this website and our and our social profiles (FacebookTwitterInstagramYouTube) is to inform about our activities and the state of the art of bilateral relations with the Holy See and with the Military Sovereign Order of Malta. Large sections of the site are also dedicated to consular services provided to Italian citizens living in the Vatican City (ex. electoral services, notarial acts, certificates) and protocol activities carried out in favor of foreign Embassies accredited to the Holy See.

The website is intended as an information tool and can be constantly updated on the basis of the comments and suggestions the readers will give us in order to improve our service.

Please follow us on social profiles and contact us using the email addresses you will find in the dedicated sections.

Enjoy the site!
