Welcome Message

Dear visitors,

I am pleased to welcome you on the website of the Italian Embassy to the Holy See and to the Sovereign Military Order of Malta.

Italy and the Holy See established diplomatic relations in 1929, following to the signature of the Lateran Treaty, and since then, bilateral relations have been steadily deepened and strengthened.

As Pope Francis recalled during the greeting speech to the Diplomatic Corp on the 9th January 2017, " The Holy See and Italy are particularly close for obvious historical, cultural and geographical reasons. This relationship was evident in the Jubilee Year, and I thank all the Italian authorities for their help in organizing this event and ensuring the security of pilgrims from all over the world.” This special relationship, rooted in our history, today represents for us, as citizens and as a country, a priceless asset that I will be honored to contribute to cure and deepen during my mandate.

The aim of this bilateral Embassy – the only one located in Roma among the Italian diplomatic network - is to look after every aspect of the multiple relationship between Italy and the Holy See, spreading from political to scientific relation, from international cooperation to culture. Regarding the cooperation, it is enough to mention for example that there are 17 Universities and Pontifical Institutes in Rome, attended by over 30 thousand students from all over the world and that, as Pope Francis recalled, during the Jubilee of Mercy 21 million pilgrims come to Rome safely thanks to the coordination between the Italian and Vatican authorities.

This Embassy also deals with the bilateral relations between Italy and the Sovereign Military Order of Malta, that established its government in our country in 1834. The Order, entitled of international subjectivity, carries out meritorious activities of assistance especially in the healthcare sector. Active in 120 Countries with humanitarian projects, the Order operates in Italy through CISOM, the Italian Rescue Body, that since 2008 has been working with the Italian Navy and the Coast Guard in the SAR (Research and Rescue) project in the Strait of Sicily.

The purpose of this website and our Twitter page (@ItalytoHolySee) is to inform about our activities and the state of the art of bilateral relations and with the Holy See and with the Military Sovereign Order of Malta. Large sections of the site are also dedicated to consular services provided to Italian citizens living in the Vatican City (ex. electoral services, notarial acts, certificates) and protocol activities carried out in favor of foreign Embassies accredited to the Holy See.

The website is intended as an information tool and can be constantly updated on the basis of the comments and suggestions the readers will give us in order to improve our service.

Please follow us on Twitter (@ItalytoHolySee and @Amb_Sebastiani) and contact us using the mails you will find in the dedicated sections.

     Enjoy the site!
