Political Cooperation

The bilateral relations between Italy and the Holy See are in full accord on a wide range of issues (priorities) at the international level, particularly with regard to the protection of religious minorities and the respect for freedom of belief. The bilateral contacts are numerous and at various levels. Traditionally, the President of the Italian Republic, immediately after his appointment, makes an official visit to the Holy Father who, shortly after, returns the visit at the Quirinale.

Annually, the embassy hosts the high-level bilateral meeting to mark the anniversary of the signing of the Lateran Treaties and the Concordat Agreement of 1984, in order to exchange views on current international affairs and on topics of bilateral interest.

Since 2015, a strengthen bilateral consultation on foreign policy among the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Secretariat of State has taken place.

In this regard, two initiatives were organized at the Farnesina: a Day on Africa and an International Conference on "The Protection of Religious Minorities". On the occasion, Italy launched the Observatory on religious freedom in the world, an institution aimed at safeguarding religious freedom through the collaboration with numerous partners.
